I’m done with how America is right now

Cancel Culture needs to go. Open-minded discussions need to happen. We need to stop generalizing and grouping. We need to eliminate the two party system. I know, it’s a lot.

I am going to rant but before I do, let me tell you a little about myself. I am an Independent-SLIGHTLY right leaning individual. As of right now, I am going to vote for Trump. But please, if you hate Trump or have a certain dislike towards Trump supporters, give this article a chance.

First things first. Cancel Culture. I completely understand why people would want to cancel individuals for being homophobic, racist, etc. There are consequences for what every single person says or does and Cancel culture has brought to light many things about many people and allowed people to support alternative celebrities, businesses, etc. that are not homophobic, racist, etc. However, I think we need to realize that people do change and that forgiveness and reconciliation is always possible. I’m not saying that everyone will change and that we should forgive right away. But what I am saying, is that as time passes, we as human beings learn, constanstly. If we want a culture and a society that operates on a high moral and ethical code, we need to practice that ourselves then. And totally cancelling someone and ignoring their apologies and their efforts to reconcile their past mistakes and wrongdoings is not practicing a higher moral and ethical code.

In addition, I think we need more open-minded discussions. As a 19 year old in Chicago, Illinois, I feel extremely forced to remain silent while many of left-leaning friends discuss politics. I also feel this way in my classroom at my urban university in Chicago. I feel this way because of this general notion that supporting Trump equates to supporting racism or homophobia, etc. However, given my likely alternative to Trump, Joe Biden, he does not appeal to me as a voter. I do not trust Joe Biden to help the American economy after coronavirus. I do not view Joe Biden as tough enough to stand up to China in regards to Trade and to Russia in regards to international relations. In addition, being born and raised in Chicago, I have seen how Democrats have run my city and my state, and I am not satisified. My only other option is to vote Republican and to vote for Trump.

I just wish though as someone who is Independent, mostly centrist, yet I slightly lean more right, I could discuss politics with my peers in and outside the classroom without judgement or labeling happening. I’m not saying that everyone I have discussed politics with judges me or labels me, but it has happened on occassion.

Many will claim that I should vote third party then. However, the likelyness of a third party candidate winning is not worth it. I might as well not vote at that point or vote for someone who actually has a chance. But at the same time, I know the two party system is completely toxic. I personally do not believe in political parties at all. They create division and can slow the legislative process. I believe that all politicians should be independents and be exclusively loyal to their constitutents. Their role is to represent us. Not big pharma or Big oil or the Military Industrial Complex or even their own personal views. Their job and duty is to serve who elected them.

If you read this article, Thank you. If you dislike Trump and/or dislike Trump supporters, maybe this can shed some light on how similar we are. I know many people do not like the two party system and cancel culture and want more open minded discussions. We can not let politics divide us, we need to always stick together because at the end of the day, we are all Americans trying to do and trying to vote for what is best for this country.
