The Problems of the Democratic Party

From inconsistency to ineffectiveness, the Democratic Party is not the answer. And neither is Joe Biden.

St Louis, Missouri, their mayor: Lyda Krewson. Detroit, Michigan, their mayor: Mike Duggan. Baltimore, Maryland, their mayor: Jack Young. Memphis, Tennessee, their mayor: Jim Strickland. Kansas City, Missouri, their mayor: Quinton Lucas. Little Rock, Arkansas, their mayor: Frank Scott, Jr. Milwaukee, Wisconsin, their mayor: Tom Barrett. Rockford, Illinois, their mayor: Tom McNamara. Cleveland, Ohio, their mayor: Frank G. Jackson. Stockton, California, their mayor: Michael Tubbs. What do all these names have in common? There are two. These are mayors of the most dangerous cities in the United States according to a list provided by USA Today. In addition, all these mayors are members of the Democratic party. The list ranked 25 of the most dangerous cities in the United States, starting with St. Louis as the most dangerous as #1 and following chronologically down the list to #10 is Stockton, California. 23 out of 25 mayors on the list are Democrats. Becky Ames, mayor of Beaumont, Texas, which ranks at number 25 on the top 25 list is a Republican. The other exception is mayor of Springfield, Missouri, Ken Mcclure, his political party is unknown.

Does this list not concern you? The fact that 23 out of 25 of the most dangerous cities in the United States are run by Democrats. We have many Democrats preaching defund the police and redirect funding to other area’s yet many of their own cities are dangerous according to USA Today. Should this be the side crying out to defund the police?

In addition, the Democrats offer no hope to working and middle class Americans. They claim to be fighters for working and middle class Americans and will take down the “evil, elitist, greedy” upper class but then decide to host fundraisers for their 2020 presidential nominee Joe Biden by providing a private Zoom call with Hillary Clinton and Tom Perez and a miraculously cheap price starting at $41,000. Seems like the “evil, elitist, greedy” upper class could be the only one to afford such a call.

My issues with the Democrats do not only end here. Many Democrats also are war-mongerers in my opinion. While raging war in the Balkans, former Secretary of State Madeline Albright under the Clinton Administration said to Colin Powell “What’s the point of having this superb military you’re always talking about if we can’t use it?” In addition to this, When Bush called for intervention in the Middle East, Many prominent Democratic senators (Hillary Clinton, Dianne Feinstein, John Kerry, and Chuck Schumer) voted yes. When Hillary Clinton became Secretary of State under Obama, the amount of troops in Afghanistan went to 100,000+. Also, Obama supported new wars in Yemen, Syria, and Libya. Obama also promised during his campaigns to bring back our troops yet did a complete 360. This brings up another issue with the Democratic Party, they do not practice what they preach. Or, their views are inconsistent.

Back in 2009, Chuck Schumer (D-New York) said “People who enter the United States without our permission are illegal aliens, and illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who entered the United States legally.” Chuck Schumer now preaches a totally different tune since the election of Donald Trump. Schumer and many other Democrats want to be allies to “refugees” coming to the United States from many South American countries, but what made those people leave those South American countries? In 2009, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton supported a coup in Honduras while the United Nations was against it. Clinton negotiated behind closed doors to allow “fast elections” and since then, drug violence and police corruption was overwhelmed the country. In 2012, Honduras had the highest homicide rate in the world. The answer is clear, Democratic policies and Democratic politicians are not suitable for foreign policy given its track-record.

I am no Republican either. I am an Indepedent. The lack of catching up with modern times and the ignorning and ignorance of many social issues within the Republican party and it’s base alone is bad. However, Republicans delivered some of the best reforms for minority groups, especially African-Americans, in the country in contrast to the Democrats. The New York Post posted an article from Gianno Caldwell, an African-American born and raised in Chicago. Gianno Caldwell wrote “African Americans were experiencing the best economy we have ever seen: Unemployment for our racial group was the lowest in recorded history, black wages were rapidly increasing for the first time in decades, and people who’d been out of work long-term were being hired and suddenly able to take their families on vacations for the first time in years. The Trump policies made it possible. Tax cuts and rocketing GDP growth meant companies were feeling financially stable for the first time in a decade and public confidence in our economy had never been higher. Trump’s re-election was on cruise control. Even Democrats were willing to admit that the chances of Trump losing were slim. No one could have predicted what would happen next. Since COVID-19, almost every economic benefit of the Trump presidency has evaporated.”

Caldwell then goes on and calls out the current 2020 Democratic presidential nominee for president Joe Biden for his policies that hurt African-Americans. Like the 1994 Crime law, which Caldwell writes “For example, the 1994 crime law, which Biden helped author when he was a senator, incentivized local police departments to lock up as many black people as possible, creating mass incarceration of African Americans, along with more prison cells and more aggressive policing. In addition, Biden was responsible for a provision in the 1986 crack law which came to be viewed as one of the most racially slanted sentencing policies on record: a rule that treated crack cocaine as significantly worse than powder cocaine and ended up disproportionately punishing African Americans and sending them to prison but sparing white Americans who typically used cocaine.

Donald Trump and Republicans have been champions for true reform and true change and true help for African-Americans in this country. Thanks to Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, and Donald Trump, the First Step Act was passed. This act released thousands from jail and according to Caldwell, 90% of those thousands were African-American. Donald Trump also promoted opportunity zones which incentivizes private investment and enterprise into marginalized communities. Trump also increased funding for historically African-American colleges and universites by 17% that leads to $100 million+ funding for those colleges in universities. By the way, Obama ended the Bush administrations $85 Million funding for these African-American colleges and universities during his tenure as president.

Republicans and Trump’s track-record looks more promising than those of the Democrats. Yes their rhetoric and the way they present themselves may be terrible, but it’s the policies at the end of the day that truly matter. It’s the policies they enact and endorse that show their true colors.

The Democrats, and many of those on the left also call for raising taxes on the rich. However, Christina Romer, the former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers under Obama, published a study saying that the max you should tax anyone at is 33%. This is according to studying the laffer curve and determining its hump. The Laffer curve is a graph that starts at 0% tax with zero revenue, then rises to a point as more revenue is earned and taxes increase then begins decreasing downwards as tax revenue decreases as tax rate increased, and ends with 100% tax and zero tax revenue. The beggining of the decreasing downwards part of the graph is the hump. Christina Romer found that increasing taxes above 33% would decrease tax revenue. The idea that increase taxation decreases tax revenue is seen historically. The Hawley-Smoot tariff bill of 1930, the bill raises taxes on imported goods, the revenue decreased. When Ronald Reagan decreased the taxes which was 70% to 50%, the tax revenue went from $22 billion, to $49 billion.

This is my other issue with the Democratic Party, they clearly do not care for economics. They preach for raising the taxes and slander Amazon for not paying any federal taxes, which is severely misconstruding. Amazon does not pay high taxes because they get major tax breaks because the heavily invest in research and development, Amazon also heavily invests in property, equipment, and plants, and Amazon has employee stock compensation. All of these things Amazon does allows for major tax breaks for the company itself. Amazon reinvests a lot of it’s money into itself. To wave the banner that Amazon isn’t paying their fair share is false, Amazon is reinvesting into itself and innovating.

In addition, for Democrats to call out these “evil, elitist, greedy” upper class members of America is ironic. Forbes reported in 2014 that 8 out of the top 10 richest zipcodes in the nation gave more money to Democrats than Republicans. Are Democrats really the party to end the class-disparity and take down these “evil, elitist, greedy” rich people?

The Democratic Party is clearly preaching one thing yet completely doing the other. I understand many people hold many ideals that the Democratic party holds as well but I can’t help but question, do Democrats really practice what they preach?
